Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a very common vision problem. It’s estimated that about 33% of Americans are myopic.

Nearsightedness causes distance blur, most people complain due to eye strain and squinting while doing distance activities such as watching TV, seeing people’s faces and seeing the blackboard.

Signs and symptoms of myopia
Sometimes nearsightedness has no symptoms, but usually causes distance blur, eye fatigue, headaches and difficulty driving (especially at night),   People that are nearsighted usually have better near vision hence the term “near” sighted.

What causes nearsightedness?
Myopia is a genetic trait that is usually passed on by your parents.  II occurs when light rays quite don’t reach the back of the eye.  It usually starts in childhood and tends to get worse with time.  There are multiple rumors that glasses, computer use or video games are linked to nearsightedness but the plain truth is there is no study that proves that nearsighted worsens with eyestrain.

Nearsighted treatment
Unfortunately there is no way to “cure” myopia.  But myopia is easily corrected with glasses, contact lenses and sometimes even with surgery.  But should only done through a licensed eye care professional.
If your glasses or contact lens prescription begins with minus numbers, like -2.50, you are nearsighted.
